Filmmaking with todays technology

Here are two pictures I really like. They are semi related to what I am about to write though.

I am really into watching movies and making them myself. I've been to a student film festival the other day and I enjoyed watching a lot of the projects. Yet I thought that a lot of the shorts I've watched looked really good but in terms of story telling they really sucked.

I find that with the new DSLR cameras and other technology it became really easy to make a movie look good. Furthermore, I think that a lot of people started to neglect the stories of their films and that they are just trying to make them look pretty. For me the whole creative part of film making is slowly turning into something more technical. Something you would need a technician for rather than a creative mind.

Don't get me wrong. I still think there are some really great films out there. I just find that that a lot of new films have a really bad story or a story that has been seen a million times before. I am mostly referring to newly produced short films.

What are your opinions on this?

  1. Good movies with great cinematography and a good story are still being produced. Check out Black Swan or 127 Hours.

In a movie you need it both; the technician and the creative mind.

  11. Yes, I completely agree. Movies are becoming WAY too generic. Most of the Americanized movies have such terrible dialogue it's actually funny.

    Oh btw nice pictures, too.

  12. I agree. With new technology it is difficult to find people focusing on the story, which is the core for any film. However, there are those rare exceptions that still focus upon the fundamentals. Great pictures by the way. Thanks for posting!
